Try it now

This is the preview build — the same app that goes to the Play Store, installed directly. Android only for now.

⬇ hanyu-preview.apk
Android 7+ · 119 MB · everything is inside it — the dictionary, all six levels and the stroke data — so nothing downloads later and nothing needs a signal.
(It's this big because one file has to carry every phone chip; the Play Store version will be roughly half, because Play sends each phone only its own share.)
  1. Tap the button on your Android phone (not a desktop).
  2. Chrome will warn that this file type can harm your device — it's an app installer, so tap Download anyway.
  3. Open the file. If Android says Chrome isn't allowed to install apps, tap Settings and switch on Allow from this source, then go back.
  4. Play Protect will offer to scan it — let it, then tap Install anyway. It says that about every app not yet downloaded from the Play Store.
  5. Open Hanyu. There's no sign-up: pick a level and start.
Why the warnings? Android shows them for any app installed outside the Play Store, regardless of what's inside it. Hanyu asks for no permissions except the microphone (only in the pronunciation exercise) and sends nothing anywhere — the privacy policy is one sentence long. If you'd rather wait for the Play Store version, email me and I'll tell you when it's up.

Tones, taught by ear

Pinyin on the page won't teach you to hear a third tone. The tones trainer plays the word and asks which pattern it was — the wall every Chinese learner hits, drilled daily.

A course, not a pile of flashcards

Each lesson walks eight words up a ladder: meet them, recognise them, build them, then produce them cold. Grammar is woven through in course order.

Type Chinese without a Chinese keyboard

Type ni3hao3, nǐhǎo or just nihao — all three are graded as the same answer. Hanzi works too.

Stroke order in your finger

Trace all 1,800 characters stroke by stroke, scored against real stroke data — direction and order both count.

Built on a real schedule

Reviews use FSRS — the modern spaced-repetition algorithm Anki uses — bringing a word back exactly when you're about to forget it.

Twenty ways to practise

接龙, the word chain. A daily word puzzle. Listening dictation. Shadowing with your own voice. Every game feeds the same review schedule.

An HSK mock test, offline

Timed and sectioned — 词汇, 语法, 听力 — generated fresh from your level each attempt, at the real 60% pass line.

Checked by a native speaker

Every grammar point and story was reviewed by a Chinese speaker before release, and the corrections are in the app.
